On January 20, our boys and girls' basketball teams traveled to California for Pacific Union College's annual basketball tournament.
While basketball was the inherent purpose of the trip, the main learning objectives of the trip were to bond together as a team (we even celebrated two birthdays), experience "college life", and to learn from college students and PUC staff about the rigors and positives of higher education.
During the trip, HMA students had the opportunity to tour San Francisco, meet with Hawaiian students studying at PUC, have a special Friday night get together with the PUC president, Bob Cushman, and of course, play basketball with our sister schools across California.
Out of 14 boys teams, HMA placed 6th. Out of 13 girls teams, HMA placed 2nd. We are extremely proud of our students and their effort especially in light of the flu that plagued half of our teams.
In addition, 3 of our students were recognized for their exemplary play and character. Chloe Bryant and Kayla Santos were recognized as All-Tournament players while Makamae Brede was recognized with the Character Award which emphasizes on-court play and sportsmanship along with off-court leadership in service and spirituality.
It is our hope that this trip will be a lifelong memory for our students and a reminder of hard work, team work, and our foundation in Jesus Christ.
